Evolution of topological defects during inflation.

چکیده

Topological defects can be formed during inflation by phase transitions as well as by quantum nucleation. We study the effect of the expansion of the Universe on the internal structure of the defects. We look for stationary solutions to the field equations, i.e. solutions that depend only on the proper distance from the defect core. In the case of very thin defects, whose core dimensions are much smaller than the de Sitter horizon, we find that the solutions are well approximated by the flat space solutions. However, as the flat space thickness parameter δ0 increases we notice a deviation from this, an effect that becomes dramatic as δ0 approaches (H) −1/ √ 2. Beyond this critical value we find no stationary solutions to the field equations. We conclude that only defects that have flat space thicknesses less than the critical value survive, while thicker defects are smeared out by the expansion.

Moduli inflation with large scale structure produced by topological defects.

It is tempting to inflate along one of the many flat directions that arise in supersymmetric theories. The required flatness of the potential to obtain sufficient inflation and to not overproduce density fluctuations occurs naturally. However, the density perturbations (in the case of a single moduli field) that arise from inflaton quantum fluctuations are too small for structure formation. Her...

Dynamics of topological defects and inflation.

We study the dynamics of topological defects in the context of “topological inflation” proposed by Vilenkin and Linde independently. Analysing the time evolution of planar domain walls and of global monopoles, we find that the defects undergo inflationary expansion if η > ∼ 0.33mP l, where η is the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field and mP l is the Planck mass. This result confirms the...

Can topological defects be formed during preheating ?

We study the dynamics of a scalar field Φ with potential g(|Φ|− η)/2 (g: self-coupling constant, η: symmetry breaking scale) after inflation and make clear whether topological defects can ever be formed during preheating. In particular, we pay attention to the GUT defects (η ∼ 10GeV − 10GeV), and consider three types of fluctuations. The first one is produced due to parametric resonance, the se...

Topological defects and open inflation

Alexander Vilenkin Institute of Cosmology, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Tufts University, Medford, MA 02155, USA Topological defects can naturally be formed soon after bubble nucleation in the open inflation scenario. The defects are not completely diluted away by the subsequent period of inflation in the bubble interior and can produce observable large-scale microwave background anisot...
